Digital devices have become a part of our day-to-day activities. Whether it’s for work, school or leisure, screens — and their effects on the eyes — are becoming harder to avoid. In today’s post, Vienna Eyecare Center discusses why everyone must take screen breaks.
Reduce Eye Strain
Staring at screens may not look like it requires physical exertion, but it can physically strain the eyes. Activities such as gaming and scrolling through social media feeds require rapid eye movements that can tire the eye muscles, resulting in eye strain and discomfort. The constant need to focus also keeps the eyes open for longer times and increases the risk of dry eyes.
The best way to take screen breaks is to use your devices for significantly shorter hours per day. If usage can’t be avoided, as is often the case with desk-based work, make sure that you are resting your eyes at every opportunity. A good rule to follow is the “20-20-20 rule”: for every 20 minutes of screen time, look away at something that’s 20 feet away for a total of 20 seconds. Apply artificial tears — eye drops that are specifically formulated for eye lubrication — to stop your eyes from drying out.
Improve Sleep Quality
Melatonin is a hormone that regulates human circadian rhythms. The body produces more melatonin as natural light decreases at night, resulting in the feeling of sleepiness. The blue light emitted by screens disrupt the production of melatonin, which can lead to irregular sleep hours, low sleep quality and an overall feeling of sluggishness when awake. Avoiding extended use of screens like binge-watching shows at night and using your phone while in bed can help improve your sleep quality, which, in turn, can improve your mood, enhance your focus and make you more productive.
Foster Healthy Relationships
Much has been said about how the use of social media is affecting the personal aspects of relationships. Taking frequent breaks from screens can help you and your family foster healthy relationships. Make plans for activities that do not involve screens: go out for ice cream with your kids, watch a sporting event, meet new people at a bar, to name a few.
