When your tears can’t provide sufficient moisture for your eyes, you may experience dry eye syndrome. If you are experiencing migraines along with dry eye, you may need to undergo an eye exam.
Here’s the link between migraines and dry eye syndrome.
These two conditions may have shared mechanisms. First off, it appears that inflammatory processes are involved in both conditions. Central sensitization is a condition where certain stimuli cause the central nervous system to become overactive. It can occur due to noise, touch or light, and sufferers may experience more intense pain and lower pain tolerance. Also, it can both happen to people with migraines and dry eye syndrome.
Also, both conditions tend to be hereditary. If you have been experiencing headaches or eye dryness while wearing your eyeglasses, it’s best to consult your eye care provider.
One study found that people with dry eye syndrome may suffer from longer and more severe migraine attacks. Various studies discovered a higher occurrence of dry eye syndrome in individuals with migraines than in the general population. The condition appears to be more common and severe in people who suffer from migraines with aura.
In a 2017 study about the link between migraines and dry eye, researchers measured tear osmolarity. They found that migraine, especially migraine with aura, had a significant connection with dry eye syndrome.
