What Are Multifocal Contact Lenses?

If you have presbyopia and don’t like wearing eyeglasses, multifocal contact lenses might be a good alternative to consider. Multifocal contact lenses offer several benefits, as discussed in today’s post.

What Is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is an eye condition that typically develops in people over the age of 40. The condition occurs when the lenses in the eyes lose their elasticity, causing the lenses to harden, which makes it difficult to focus on images. This condition results in a blurry near-range vision.

What Are Multifocal Contact Lenses?

Multifocal contact lenses are designed with different lens powers in the same lens, allowing the wearer to see clearly at varying distances. These lenses are typically prescribed to patients with presbyopia. Since multifocal contact lenses have multiple prescriptions in one lens and they can offer both distance vision correction and near vision correction, there’s no need for you to wear different lenses for different activities.

What Are the Different Types of Multifocal Contact Lenses?

There are three types of multifocal lenses:

  • Aspheric multifocal lenses – These lenses place both the distance and near prescriptions in the central vision area. Many soft disposable lenses are made with aspheric lens designs.
  • Concentric multifocal lenses – These lenses are designed with concentric circles that enable a gradual transition from one prescription to the next.
  • Segmented bifocal lenses – These are rigid gas permeable lenses that resemble bifocal eyeglasses. The near prescription is at the bottom half of the lens, while the distance prescription is found at the top half.
