Vision Correction Procedures You Should Know About

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported in 2015 that there are 1.89 billion people worldwide with vision afflicted by refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness). In addition to eyeglasses and contact lenses, there are procedures that can help correct refractive errors. Vienna Eyecare Center discusses more below.

LASIK

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. A surgical procedure that reshapes the cornea, LASIK can help correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. It should be noted that LASIK is not suitable for everyone. To ensure it’s a safe and effective option, the patient must undergo a thorough eye exam before the procedure can be scheduled.

A typical LASIK procedure begins with a precise cut on the outer layer of the cornea, creating a flap. The underlying corneal tissue is then reshaped using a precisely-calibrated laser. The new shape of the cornea will depend on the patient’s eye condition. After shaping the cornea, the flap is carefully repositioned. The patient’s vision will be blurry at first, but will gradually become clear as the flap heals and adheres to the new shape of the cornea. The patient may still need to wear low-strength eyeglasses during the first few weeks after the operation.

Orthokeratology

Patients who are afflicted with a refractive error but would prefer a noninvasive procedure should consider orthokeratology. During treatment, the patient wears a special set of contact lenses at night while they sleep. These contact lenses act like molds that temporarily reshape the cornea, so the patient will enjoy clear eyesight throughout the next day.
