At Vienna Eyecare Center, we are always looking for ways to improve our products and services. For dry eye relief, we are proud to introduce Meibomian Duct Therapy or MiBoFlo Thermoflo®. In today’s post, our expert optometrist discusses this treatment method in detail.
A Brief Background on Dry Eye Syndrome
Your eyes’ Meibomian glands constantly produce tears to maintain your visual health and comfort. Tears are made up of three layers: the innermost mucus layer, which helps spread tears evenly across your eyes’ surface; the middle watery layer, which provides constant lubrication; and the outermost layer, which prevents tears from evaporating too quickly. Any changes to the quantity of tears your eyes produce or the quality of these layers can cause dry eye syndrome.
How MiBoFlo Works
MiBoFlo therapy uses thermoelectric radiation to help manage dry eyes. Our experienced eye doctor explains that it emits a therapeutic temperature of 108 degrees to liquefy dried-up or viscous tears. This can also help enhance Meibomian glandular functions.
Before we start, we will ask you to remove your contact lenses (if you wear them) and any eye makeup to ensure proper heat absorption. We will then have you close your eyes while we apply ultrasound gel on the MiBoFlo eye pads and start the timer. You may sense slight pressure as we massage your eyelids with the eye pads. You can expect the session to last for about eight minutes per eye.
Importance of Using MiBoFlo to Manage Ocular Surface Diseases
Studies reveal this revolutionary dry eye treatment to be effective at treating Meibomian gland dysfunctions and other ocular surface problems. It can be used as a mainstay eye care management for those with mild to moderate dry eye syndrome. Patients love it because it is a non-invasive, low-cost approach to treating dry eye syndrome as compared to other options. Most importantly, with this procedure your risk of developing corneal distortion—a condition common among eyelid therapies—is quite low.
