The Importance of Preserving Vision Past the Age of 40

As we observe Healthy Aging Month this September, the team at Vienna Eyecare Center is spreading awareness about the signs and symptoms of age-related vision problems. Read on to learn about common eye conditions among seniors along with treatment options.

Aging and Eye Health

Aging is an inevitable part of life. With middle age comes various physical changes, including a higher risk of developing certain eye conditions. Having your eyes checked regularly by an optometrist is the best way to stay on top of your visual health.

Many people over the age of 40 will develop presbyopia, a refractive error that causes trouble with close-range vision. You may suddenly need to hold reading materials at arm’s length to see the letters clearly. This condition is a result of the loss of the lenses’ flexibility due to aging.

Age-Related Eye Conditions

The risk of eye disease tends to rise later in life. Cataracts result from the eyes’ lenses becoming cloudy. Macular degeneration refers to the loss of function of the macula, which is the part of the retina responsible for maintaining central vision. Glaucoma occurs due to an increase in pressure in the eyes from fluid buildup. Without treatment, these conditions can lead to irreversible vision loss, which is why visiting an eye doctor is imperative for older adults.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle also helps preserve vision. If you are a smoker, make every effort to quit, as smoking increases the risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. Eating eye-healthy rich in vitamin A also helps encourage healthy eyes.
