Sudden Blurred Vision and What You Should Know About It

Sometimes, we forget just how important clear and healthy eyesight truly is. That’s why it can feel like the world spins to a stop when your vision suddenly changes. Sudden blurred vision is generally a symptom of an underlying eye problem you probably didn’t know you have. It can affect one or both eyes, compromising parts of your vision, or even your entire line of sight. Vienna Eyecare Center, the leading provider of high-quality contact lenses, discusses this condition below.

What Exactly Can Cause Sudden Blurred Vision?

The list of things that can lead to blurred vision is extensive. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Stroke. When a person suffers a stroke, the part of the brain that controls vision may be affected, resulting in blurriness or loss of vision in both eyes.
  • Eye Strain. Focusing your eyes on something for extended periods can strain them. Too much screen time from using smartphones or computers, reading without sufficient light, and driving in poor visibility conditions can all cause eye strain, which may eventually lead to sudden blurred vision.
  • Refractive Errors. Eye disorders such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can also cause sudden blurriness in vision unless diagnosed early via eye exam, and mitigated by a trusted optometrist.
  • Conjunctivitis. Also referred to as pink eye, conjunctivitis is an infection that affects the lining of the eyes. It can be caused by a virus, bacteria or allergies.

When Should You Be Concerned?

The fact that your vision has suddenly become clouded is reason enough to be concerned. And if that sudden blurriness is accompanied by these symptoms, you’ll want to take action by visiting your eye doctor as soon as possible:

  • Eye pain
  • Severe headaches
  • Signs that may point to a stroke, such as facial droop, difficulty in speaking, and loss of muscle control on one side of the body
  • Reduced vision in one eye
