Should You Keep Wearing Contact Lenses If You Have Dry Eyes?

Contact lenses are a convenient alternative to eyeglasses, which some people consider cumbersome. However, some people complain that their eyes feel dry after extended use of contact lenses. In today’s post, Vienna Eyecare Center discusses whether it’s okay to keep wearing contact lenses if you have dry eyes.

The short answer is yes–but with a few caveats. Read on to learn more:

  1. Wash Your Hands Thoroughly Before Touching Your Lenses. Be sure to wash your hands every single time before touching your contact lenses. Failure to do so can lead to contact lens-related eye infections. Wash your hands thoroughly with water and soap, then dry them with a lint-free cloth before touching your lenses.
  1. Remove Your Contacts Before Going to Bed. Sleeping with your contacts still in increases the risk of developing a corneal infection. This is because your eyes don’t receive as much oxygen while sleeping, making them the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Sleeping with your contacts in could even lead to further complications like a corneal ulcer, a serious condition that requires prompt treatment from an eye doctor.
  2. Never Outwear Your Lenses. Contact lenses need to be replaced periodically. Some can be worn for several weeks, while others need to be replaced after a single use. Always follow these instructions to a T. Wearing your contact lenses longer than you’re supposed to can cause serious complications.

Be mindful that no matter what kind of contact lenses you wear, we recommend having an annual eye exam to ensure that your eyes are healthy and your vision is stable.
