Scleral Lenses: Who Will Benefit From Them?

Contact lenses are one of the most common options for people with refractive errors, such as nearsightedness and farsightedness. However, some people find it uncomfortable to wear contacts because of the shape of their eyes. It isn’t the case anymore, thanks to modern advances in contact lens technology.

Continue reading to discover people who need to wear scleral lenses.

What Are Scleral Lenses?

Scleral lenses are not like conventional contacts. They are rigid gas permeable lenses with a diameter of 14 mm to 24 mm. These lenses lay directly on the sclera or white part of the eye, which has fewer nerve endings. Patients who wear them experience less sensitivity and discomfort because of their size and where they rest. Some even say that they are more comfortable than soft contact lenses.

Who Will Benefit From Them?

Anyone can wear scleral lenses, but they will greatly benefit people with corneal diseases, dystrophies and degenerations. During an eye exam, if your doctor discovers that you have corneal irregularities or scars, they might recommend these lenses. They are also ideal for individuals who have undergone corneal transplants, LASIK and other refractive surgeries.

Moreover, people with corneal issues are usually the best candidates for scleral lenses. A cornea that is irregularly shaped or not in a flawless dome shape will cause poor vision. Scleral lenses contain isotonic fluid. They create a reservoir between the cornea and the back of the lenses that helps keep the eyes lubricated. This reservoir also fills the imperfections with the cornea, creating a perfect domed surface.
