Important Tips for Preventing Contact Lens Infections

Contact lenses are a very convenient way to correct your vision. However, failing to handle and care for your contacts properly can increase the risk of infection. In this article, your trusted optometrist from Vienna Eyecare Center, discusses the best practices for preventing contact lens-related infections.

Quick Do’s and Don’ts

Most importantly, always wash your hands before handling your contacts. Never reuse your cleaning solution; use fresh cleaning solution every day. Keep your lens case clean and replace it every three months. Don’t sleep while wearing your contact lenses. Always follow the advice of your eye doctor and make sure to read and follow the instructions and labels of your contacts and cleaning solution.

Taking Care of Your Contact Lenses

While you should always defer to the recommendations of your eye doctor, here are some general best practices for handling and caring for your contact lenses:

  • Disinfect – Always disinfect your contacts before wearing them, using the store-bought solution that your doctor recommended. Never wash your contact lenses with water or homemade saline because they contain germs.
  • Rub Lenses – Wash your hands before touching your contact lenses. Place one lens at a time in your palm with fresh solution, then rub the lens gently to loosen the protein and bacteria that may have built up on the surface
  • Replace and Renew – You should replace your contact lens case at least every three months. You should also buy new contact lenses when your doctor recommends. Don’t wear your lenses if they are expired.
  • Rest Your Eyes – You should occasionally give your eyes a break from wearing contact lenses. Never sleep while wearing your lenses.
