Home Safety Awareness to Avoid Eye Injuries

Eye injuries can happen anywhere, even in the comfort of your home. In fact, 50% of the 2.5 million eye injuries that occur annually are caused by performing routine household activities.

Common Causes of Eye Injuries at Home

Chemical-related eye injuries that occur in residential homes are often caused by soaps, disinfectants, solvents, cosmetics or bleach. Children are also prone to eye-related accidents, which can impair their eyesight or even cause blindness. Toys with hard or sharp edges, for instance, can harm a child’s eye, especially without adult supervision. Other causes of eye injuries include mascara brushes, eyelash curlers, air-blown particles, bungee cords, champagne corks and fall accidents.

Note that safety goggles are different from regular corrective eyeglasses, which do not provide any protection.
