It’s never too late to start practicing healthy eye habits. From not replacing your contact lenses frequently enough to spending too much time in front of the computer, there are many bad habits that could be compromising your visual health.
Today, Vienna Eyecare Center discusses common bad habits that might be hurting your eyes.
Smartphone Stress
Your eyes get strained when it has to read small text, a common activity whenever you’re using your smartphone. This can lead to dry eyes, blurry vision and headaches. Give yourself a break after 20 minutes of continued phone use to allow your eyes some rest. If you must spend significant time looking at your phone or other digital device, ask your doctor about computer eyeglasses, which provide some protection.
Screen Time Before Bedtime
Your pupils dilate according to how much light is present at any given time. Changing light levels rapidly and frequently can cause eye strain, which is why it’s not recommended to use any type of screen before you go to sleep. This includes smartphones, e-readers, computers and televisions.
Contact Lens Safety
Even if you’re extremely tired at night, make it a point to remove your contact lenses before you sleep. Neglecting to do so increases your risk of infection.
Regular Eye Care
Consult with your eye doctor and have your eyes checked periodically. Never skip any eye exam that you’re scheduled for and always replace your contact lenses as advised to avoid the risk of infection. If you notice any irregularities with your vision or experience uncomfortable symptoms like dry eyes, visit your eye doctor as soon as possible for an exam.
