Your eye care regiment should include taking proper care of your eyelids–which contain some of the thinnest, most sensitive skin on your entire body–as well as your eyelashes. Proper eyelid and eyelash hygiene helps reduce the risk of infection and safeguards your overall visual health.
Today, Vienna Eyecare Center, a top local optometrist, discusses the basics of proper eyelid care.
Eyelid Hygiene
Even if you wear eyeglasses, your eyelids are exposed to germs every day, especially if you wear makeup frequently. Before you go to bed, make sure to wash out your eyes thoroughly and use non-abrasive eyelid wipes to gently remove any makeup you have on. It’s also important to keep everything that comes into contact with your eyelids clean. This includes pillows, makeup applicators and towels.
Blepharitis and Demodex
Unclean eyelids can easily become a breeding ground for bacterial infection. The symptoms of infected eyelids are redness, itchiness and dry eyes. This condition is called blepharitis and it usually sets the stage for demodex, a parasite that feeds off the bacteria that cause blepharitis. These conditions are completely treatable, however. If you suspect that your eyelids or lashes have been affected, consult with an eye doctor.
Good Eyelid Hygiene
Healthy eyelids mean healthy eyes. Practicing good hygiene habits will not only keep blepharitis away but will also protect the glands around your eyes that produce tears. Your tears provide a natural wash for your eyes and can help alleviate symptoms of dry eyes. If your irritation persists, however, it’s always best to consult with an eye doctor.
