5 Tips for First-Time Contact Lens Wearers

Whether it’s for aesthetics or convenience, switching from eyeglasses to contact lenses can be an exciting step towards. We understand that the switch can be daunting for the first time, and in today’s post Vienna Eyecare Center shares some tips that can help you ease the process.

  1. Understand Your Contacts. Just like any other kind of eyewear, there are other types of contact lenses, and it’s important to understand that there are different types. Therefore, they are not interchangeable. Daily disposables, for example, offer the convenience of tossing them at the end of the day without the need for cleaning or storage. Bi-weekly or monthly lenses, on the other hand, require diligent cleaning, disinfecting and storage to prevent contamination. But don’t worry — your eye care doctor will discuss your options during your consultation.
  2. Practice Proper Hygiene. The significance of hygiene cannot be overstated when it comes to handling contact lenses. After all, they come into direct contact with your eyes. Always wash your hands with mild soap, rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free towel before touching your lenses or your eyes.
  3. Practice Insertion and Removal. Placing and removing contact lenses is not as simple as wearing eyeglasses. If you’re wearing contacts for the first time, set aside time to practice it before incorporating it into your daily routine. Practice in a well-lit area with a mirror, ideally over a clean surface in case the lens falls. With enough practice, wearing contacts will become second nature.
  4. Use Cleaning Products as Advised. Using the correct solutions and products for your specific type of lenses is another key factor for proper storage and maintenance. Not all contact lens solutions are created equal, and using the wrong type can harm your lenses or your eyes. Ask your eye doctor for specific ingredients to watch out for when buying cleaning products.
  5. Stick to the Schedule. Over-wearing contact lenses can lead to discomfort and increase the risk of eye problems, so make it a point to stick to the schedule prescribed by your eye doctor. Dispose of your lenses properly and according to your specific type.
