4-Step Guide to Keeping Your Eyes in Great Shape

Compromised visual health can reduce your quality of life and undermine your productivity at work. This is why Vienna Eyecare Center emphasizes the importance of taking a proactive approach to caring for your eyes. As May marks Healthy Vision Month, your eye doctor shares four effective ways to maintain your visual health.

1. Know Your Family History

Many vision problems are hereditary, which is why it’s essential to know your family medical history. During a vision exam, your eye care specialist will ask you about eye conditions that run in your family. Having a parent, sibling or any other relative who’s nearsighted, for example, puts you at a higher risk of requiring some form of vision correction as well. With this information, your optometrist can create an eye care plan that addresses your unique risk factors.

2. Lead a Healthy Lifestyle

Living healthy is another great way to keep your eyes in top shape. Your eye care specialist suggests preparing nutritious meals with eye-friendly like leafy greens, cold-water fish and citrus fruits.

Make it a habit to exercise daily as well. Simple things, such as choosing to take the stairs rather than the elevator can make a big difference. Exercise promotes healthy blood flow to your eyes, ensuring they receive enough nutrients and oxygen to function properly.

3. Wear Proper Eyewear

No matter the season, you should always wear sunglasses when going outside to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Choose a pair with oversized lenses and wraparound frames for your enhanced visual protection. You should also wear proper safety eyewear whenever you’re playing sports, doing construction or engaging in other activities that could put your eyes at risk.

4. Visit Your Optometrist on a Regular Basis

Some of the most serious eye conditions are asymptomatic in the early stages. This is why it’s necessary to visit your optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam regularly. The sooner we detect and manage potential eye conditions, the more effectively we can treat you.
