Refractive errors are usually treated with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. While these methods are effective, Vienna Eyecare Center recommends considering another equally reliable, cost-efficient and long-lasting solution in the form of LASIK.
False information about LASIK, however, may hold you back from considering this option. Read on as your optometrist debunks four common myths about LASIK.
Myth #1: LASIK Is Painful
On the contrary, you won’t feel anything during LASIK. Your eye surgeon will apply anesthetic drops to desensitize your eyes. You may feel pressure to a certain degree or some vibrations as the laser excimer rearranges the tissues underneath your cornea. As the anesthesia wears off, you may also experience a tingling sensation, which usually goes away after a few hours.
Myth #2: LASIK Is Risky S
Your eye doctor explains that LASIK is actually one of the most reliable and safest procedures in the optometry field. Thanks to advances in laser technology, only a few complications have been reported.
Myth #3: LASIK Is a Panacea for Eyesight Errors
LASIK was developed to correct refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). That said, having LASIK is not a guarantee you won’t need to use prescription eyewear ever again in the future. Your eyes may still change over time, requiring you to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses to maintain your eyesight.
Myth #4: Anyone Can Undergo LASIK
You must meet certain criteria to be approved for LASIK. You need to be at least 18 years of age on the day of the procedure. Your vision and general well-being must also be stable. Your eye care specialist needs to perform a comprehensive eye exam first to check if you meet the requirements before recommending this refractive surgery.
